Course Content:

This course is designed to provide an entry qualification to students over 19 who wish to progress to university. Students can choose from diplomas in Nursing, Midwifery and Healthcare Professions, and Sciences and Social Sciences.

The course will provide a solid grounding in the skills needed for effective learning of the knowledge and understanding of the subjects required for a career in various vocational areas such as Nursing, Midwifery, Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Primary Teaching, Social Work, Psychology, Sociology and the Sciences.

Before you can enrol you will need to complete an application form stating what qualifications you have already achieved, you will then be asked to attend an informal interview which will entail a short written task.  You will need to produce your certificates at the interview.

Units followed could include:

  • Health Studies
  • Psychology
  • Communication Studies
  • Sociology
  • Chemistry
  • Statistics

Studying at Alton College:

The lesson style has an emphasis on student participation. You will be involved in discussions, seminars and individual and group research. There will be video and practical sessions and you will be expected to prepare assignments. Guidance will be given on each task you undertake. There will also be lessons on study skills, IT and statistics. You will be assigned a personal tutor who will support you in your studies and progression.

Time management is essential in completing the assessment tasks and you should allow for five hours a week study time per subject module outside of class. You will be given deadlines and expected to keep to these, unless there are exceptional circumstances.


An interview is required before you can enrol on this course.


Assessment is by continuous coursework and short examinations.



Students who will be seeking progression to Nursing, Midwifery, Teaching or Social Work at HE level will need to ensure that they have the appropriate work experience to back up the course. These university courses are highly competitive and you need to expect to work hard and achieve Distinction grades on the Access to HE course for progression to HE.


Entry Requirements:

Students should  have already gained Maths, Science and English GCSE at grade A* - C or an IELTs score of 7 and a Numeracy qualification.

£3160 tuition fee

£125 Registration fee


This is a Skills Funding Agency course and you may be exempt from the tuition fee if aged under 24 and this is your first level 3 course, however you would be required to pay the examination fee at the time of enrolment. Tuition fees for overseas students may vary from those quoted.
