You will be encouraged to identify any errors in your technique and help will be on hand to correct them.
You will also be required to write in a range of different styles for different purposes and audiences. Homework will consist largely of reading a range of texts, both literary and non-literary.
There will be timed assessments and mock examinations throughout the year, mostly carried out in class time.

Studying at Alton College:

Why study GCSE English?
If you are an adult returning to education you may have found you need a more up-to-date qualification than the one you have already, or maybe you missed out the first time around. If you lack confidence or English is not your first language you would benefit from our Improve your English course first.

Examination only.
2 exam papers; Fiction and Imaginative Writing (1 hour 45 minutes) and Non-fiction and Transactional Writing (2 hours).
Speaking and Listening: you will be assessed on your ability to deliver a prepared spoken presentation on a specific topic in a formal setting and your ability to listen and respond to questions and feedback, using spoken English effectively. This is internally assessed and will be graded (Pass, Merit or Distinction) and reported as a separate grade on your Certificate.
