Course Content:

This course is to guide and assess the development of knowledge and skills relating to the health and social care workforce and confirms competence in these areas:

  • Care assistants/support workers/key workers in residential settings.
  • Healthcare assistants/support workers in community and primary care environments.
  • Care assistants/support workers/key workers in domiciliary services.
  • Care assistants/support workers/key workers in day services.
  • Support workers in supported living projects.
  • Community-based care assistants/support workers/key workers, including those working in specialist areas e.g. dementia, learning disabilities.
  • Personal assistants employed directly by the individual they support or their families.
  • Emerging new types of workers and multidisciplinary health roles crossing traditional service barriers and delivery models.

Units include:

  • Introduction to Communication
  • Introduction to Personal Development
  • Introduction to duty of Care
  • Principles of Safeguarding and Protection

Studying at Alton College:

The course is run over 25 weeks with 2.5 hours underpinning in college and candidates will be expected to complete about 10 hours of Professional Practice, which will include your work role, as well as a minimum of 3.5 hours per week private study.

To achieve the Level 2 Diploma in Health and Social Care, learners must achieve a minimum total of 46 credits.  From the mandatory units 24 credits and a minimum of 22 from optional units.

You will study a number of units over the 30 weeks covering a range of Health and Social Care related subjects, which will give you an understanding of this qualification.


You will need to build up a portfolio regarding your work role which will be internally assessed at college and also by an External verifier.  You will also be observed in the workplace.


It is anticipated that learners will progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England (QCF), or to specialist qualifications reflecting the context in which they work.

Entry Requirements:

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates undertaking this Diploma.  However, a good basic understanding of English and Maths is required and there is an age restriction.  This Level 2 Diploma is not approved for the use of those who are under 16 years of age.

£1000 tuition fee.

Registration and certification fee.

You will be expected to provide your own text books, writing materials, note paper and data sticks.


This is a Skills Funding Agency course and you may be exempt from the tuition fee, however you would be required to pay the examination fee at the time of enrolment. Tuition fees for overseas students may vary from those quoted.
