Studying at Alton College:

Lessons activities are wide ranging, from classroom discussions on how best to mathematically model a situation and experiments to  measure the heights of tree using trigonometry, to practising problem solving questions in pairs.  You’ll be with other adult students who need an improved grade.  You’ll also be expected to spend up to three hours a week on work set by the teacher.
The main aim of the course will be for students to gain a grade 4 (or 5) and thus the focus of the teaching will be at Foundation tier.  This includes topics not previously assessed in Foundation, including and simultaneous and quadratic equations, standard form, trigonometry, area of sectors and tree diagrams.  You may wish to do the Higher tier, to gain up to grade 9, but this will require extra study in your own time, using internet-based learning and other resources.
Past students have found the course very rewarding but sometimes difficult.  Different students enjoy varying parts of the course.  The greatest pleasure comes from gaining in confidence and realising you can do Maths!

Assessment:

100% exams, consisting of 3 exam papers, each 1½ hours long

Progression:

To Further and Higher Education and help gain employment or training.
