What is the Level 2 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in IT?

Information Technology is about using computers to complete tasks found in the work place. The 21st Century is continuing the IT revolution that has changed the way we carry out business, communicate, spend our leisure time and learn. Many jobs today cannot be carried out effectively without the use of a computer. Can you name a business or company that doesn’t use a computer in some way for its everyday functions and activities?

This one year course is equivalent to two GCSEs at A* - C and will develop your computer skills and theoretical knowledge, as well as prepare you for a wide range of careers involving computers, either within a technical capacity or service providing role.

You will study a number of units over one year that will include: Communicating and Working in the IT Industry, Computer Systems and Doing Business Online.

Note: This course is studied in conjunction with CTEC Level 2 Technical Extended Certificate in Business.

Is the Level 2 Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in IT suitable for me?

One of the most challenging parts of the course is the need to meet deadlines for the coursework assignments. Your skills in time management will improve over the year and this will be vital for gaining good grades. You will often work in small groups and be required to present your findings for a particular task that you have been set to the rest of the group as part of your assessment.

Students studying a Level 2 course over the past few years have appreciated the different relationships they have with teachers at college and the amount of individual support they receive. Probably the most important challenge for students is learning how to take more responsibility for organising their study time so that they balance college work, part-time jobs and other commitments. An opportunity for work experience is included during your course.

How will I learn?

Lessons in the classroom will include a mixture of formats including group work, individual activities, practical workshops, working with case studies, videos, and some formal note-taking sessions. You will find yourself working with others, applying key skills and improving your knowledge throughout all the units of the course. Some study support is provided in college to help students with their assignments and other homework. Students should also expect to spend at least five hours per week outside of lessons in college on independent study.

How will I be assessed?

You will study a total of four units during this one year course. All of these units are assessed by coursework, which may include the production of portfolios, presentations, practical projects and staff observations.

For each unit you complete you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. You will also be awarded an overall grade which will be at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

Progression

Success will give you a nationally recognised qualification. You will have undertaken activities and acquired skills that will make you more employable and provide the entry requirements for further education or training. During the course, careers guidance will be available to help you decide and plan your future. You may feel ready for employment, or you may wish to progress to a Level 3 Extended Diploma, providing you have achieved a Merit grade overall. Many students choose to progress onto the Extended Diploma in IT following success on the CTEC Level 2 Technical Extended Certificate course.

Entry requirements

You would normally have achieved a Grade D profile at GCSE. For GCSE English and Maths where a new grading system has been introduced, a Grade 3 is equivalent to a Grade D. To study this subject you must have an interest in technical subjects.

Course costs

All students will be expected to provide their own stationery and calculators (where appropriate).

If the costs of equipment and materials may cause you financial hardship, you may wish to read through details of our financial support scheme on our website.

Is a Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Sport suitable for me?

Many of the students find the vocational nature of the course both stimulating and purposeful, providing a real insight into the sport and leisure industry. The five day work experience ties in well with many aspects of the course reinforcing the links between the aims of the course and future employment.

The manner in which the course is assessed also attracts students to it. Many students prefer coursework to examinations, allowing them to achieve good grades and develop their confidence and self-esteem. All eight units are assessed internally.

How will I learn?

You will study eight units during the year, some of which will be classroom based and others will take place in either the Sports Hall or Fitness Room. You will enjoy a variety of assignments and challenges. You will find yourself working with others, applying key skills and improving on both your own knowledge and performance throughout all the units of the course.

While there is much theoretical knowledge to be acquired in some units, many have a vocational application so you will not spend all your time in the classroom. You will have opportunities to improve on your own practical performance, learn to officiate and take responsibility for leading activities.

Assignments will be set and you must be well-organised to ensure that the deadlines are met. You will be expected to do work outside of lessons; reading and researching for your assignments, so managing your time will be important.

How will I be assessed?

The course is made up of eight units:

  • Practical Sport
  • Anatomy and Physiology for Sport
  • Fitness testing and training
  • Development of Personal Fitness
  • Effects of Exercise on the Body Systems
  • Injury in Sport
  • Planning and Leading Sports Activities
  • Psychology for Sports Performance

All internal units will be assessed and graded by your teachers. At the end of the course points gained will combine to form an overall grade. You can achieve a Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

Progression

A CTEC Level 2 Technical Diploma prepares you for either progression (with a Merit or Distinction) to an Advanced course such as the BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma in Sport, an AS/A2 Level programme of study, further training (gym instructor/sports coaching) or employment (e.g. in sports and leisure centres).

Entry requirements

You would normally have achieved a Grade D profile at GCSE. For GCSE English and Maths where a new grading system has been introduced, a Grade 3 is equivalent to a Grade D. To study this subject you should have an interest in Sport.

Course costs

All students will be expected to provide their own folders, dividers, plastic wallets, pens, paper, textbooks, stationery, and calculators (where appropriate). You will be expected to provide suitable sportswear for the practical sessions.

Essential: There is no recommended textbook, however there will be some additional costs for course materials at £5.00.
