Overview

Initially, you will study the main approaches in Psychology, and biopsychology in particular, to gain a grounded foundation in the subject from considering conflicting and complementary explanations of behaviour.

You will also study memory, attachment, social influence, psychopathology and research methods in the first year. A series of short and manageable practical experiments and tests accompany the areas of the syllabus and allow students to develop an active knowledge of the scientific aspects of Psychology.

In the second year you will develop your understanding of Psychology, its uses and scientific methodology through selection of a choice of applications including forensic psychology, schizophrenia and cognitive development. Within these, you will carry out a range of practicals and small class tests.

Five GCSEs at grade 4 or above to include English Language, Mathematics and Science.

Year One:
– Introductory topics in Psychology – Social influence, memory, attachment and psychopathology
– Psychology in context – Approaches in psychology, biopsychology and research methods

Year Two:
– Psychology in context – Approaches in psychology and research methods
– Issues and Options in Psychology – Issues and debates, cognition and development, schizophrenia and forensic psychology

Teaching concentrates on guiding you through a process of active learning, via lively group discussions and structured activities. These are designed to allow links to be made between personal experience or viewpoints and the more research-based theory and evidence that is studied and assessed by a series of structured essays set as homework throughout the course.

Statistics is an aspect of the practical work.Regular reading and research is essential, as is the on-going practical element, which is thoroughly supported and assessed by tutors. You will be encouraged to use a variety of sources such as books, videos, journal articles and computer software.

Great emphasis is given to the development of independent study skills.

Examination at the end of year two.

The skills and knowledge of Psychology are relevant to any career involving contact with other people. Whatever your career path from medicine to law, from counselling to business, from sport to teaching, Psychology provides you with an excellent foundation and many transferable skills.

This is a really good college, and it is definitely somewhere you can achieve your dreams.

Yolanda Stemp, BTEC student

I overcame a couple of barriers by working really hard to get the top grades. My experience was really good, with the course and the lecturers, the residentials and activities, together it was all really good. I had really great teaching support, I could always go to the lecturers and speak to them if I needed to.

David Stenning, Public Services student

The tutors were really supportive and it was all thanks to them that I have achieved what I have. I’ve also made loads of great friends and really enjoyed my time at the college.
