As part of Alton College’s ongoing schools' liaison work, a group of Year 10 pupils from Amery Hill School recently visited the Philosophy department to explore topics including Philosophical Zombies and Consciousness.

Brecon Beacons Expedition

As part of the BTEC Public Services course, students are given the opportunity to take part in a week long-field trip to take part in exciting outdoor activities and team-building exercises. A large group of students and four staff recently travelled to the Hampshire Mountain Centre in the Brecon Beacons in South Wales and completed two expeditions, caving, gorge walking, or climbing.

Gifted and Talented pupils give new perspectives

Gifted and Talented pupils from Weydon School scooped first prize in this year’s Above and Beyond Competition. The theme this year was ‘2017 has given us new perspectives on our world’ and Year 10 pupils from Eggar’s School, The Petersfield School, Weydon School and Farnham Heath End School worked in teams to prepare an EPQ-style project and gave a 10-minute presentation on their investigation outcomes.

An Electric Performance

Alton College Music Department strengthened its links with higher education this week when a group of students took part, and came out winners of the annual Southampton Solent Sound Music Festival held at Solent University. The festival saw nine colleges across Hampshire and Wiltshire enter a “Battle of the Bands” competition with a first prize of £200.

Diplomatic talk on China

As part of extra-curricular activities and talks organized at Alton College for students, involvement in the Speakers for Schools scheme enabled a group of students to hear from the esteemed Sir Christopher Hum. Politics student Ewan Griffiths, previously at Amery Hill School, attended the talk and gave us his account recently.

Earth Sciences expedition

Isabel Carter studied A levels in Biology, Maths, Physics and the EPQ at Alton College leaving in 2016, and is now studying Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford. This summer, she is leading a Geological Mapping expedition to South Greenland. Her group will be spending seven weeks based in the small village of Igaliku, producing a detailed geological map of the surrounding area.

Scholarships for Excellence

The annual Alton College Foundation Scholarships for Excellence Awards took place in the Wessex Arts Centre on campus recently for the 16th year. Trevor Heley, Managing Director of the Foundation, welcomed students, parents, sponsors, College staff, Governors and the Foundation Directors to celebrate the achievement of the successful scholars.
