Laura Jurd Quartet and Ligeti Quartet Play Music from the Stunning New Album - Landing Ground

Laura, a former Alton College student returns to the college to play a 'hometown' gig to celebrate the launch of her debut album Landing Ground. This is the first release on the Chaos Collective Label which was set up by core members of the Chaos Collective and the Laura Jurd Quartet.


Laura Jurd is a London based trumpet player, composer and jazz musician. Originally from the village of Medstead, near Alton, Hampshire Laura began her musical career under the tuition on pianist Pam Edwards. Continuing her musical studies throughout school she went on to study at Alton College where she began studying composition with Martin Read. A diverse musician, she plays and writes a wide variety of music, drawing upon classical, jazz and folk influences. In the latter part of her studies at Trinity College of Music, Laura has particular interests in improvisation and composition having studied with the likes of Chris Batchelor, Issie Barratt, Mark Lockheart, Liam Noble, Julian Siegel and Errolyn Wallen. She was awarded the 2011 Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition with the winning piece premiered at Ronnie Scott's Jazz Club. She also received the 2012 Musician’s Benevolent Fund Development Award as co-founder of the ‘Chaos Collective’. More recently she has been nominated for the 2012 Worshipful Company of Musician's Jazz Medal.

As a trumpet player Laura can be found playing with a number of ensembles. Her quartet has played in many of London's top venues over the last couple of years as an active group in the UK jazz scene, featuring in festivals such as the London Jazz Festival and the Brit Jazz Festival. The quartet have teamed up with the Ligeti Quartet, playing a set of Laura's compositions for string quartet, trumpet, piano, bass and percussion which can be heard on her debut album 'Landing Ground' due to be released later this year by Chaos Collective. She is also musical director of the Chaos Orchestra whom she conducts and writes for on a regular basis. As well as this Laura plays with the London Sound Painting Orchestra, the Elliot Galvin Group, Blue-Eyed Hawk, the Matt Roberts Big Band, the Nu Civilisation Orchestra and more recently has worked with conductor/composer/keyboardist Howard Moody and 'La Folia' as part of the 'London 2012 Cultural Olympiad'  playing new commissions by John Surman, Howard Moody and Helen Chadwick.

As a composer Laura writes for many of her own projects as well as having written for The Chaos Orchestra, Saxophonquadrat Berlin, Mark Lockheart, the Ligeti Quartet and many other ensembles from solo pieces to orchestral works to choral music. As mentioned previously she studied with composers Issie Barratt and Errollyn Wallen as well as attending composition classes with composer Deirde Gribbin.
