Host Families Wanted
Do you have a spare room in your home?
Do you live within 30 minutes of Alton College by public transport?
Could you offer one of our International Students a home from home experience?
Following the launch of its International Strategy, Alton College has been working hard to attract students from overseas, and in particular from our partner schools in China. Our first two international students have had a very successful year and have received excellent offers from two top UK universities to continue their studies. Their success has been helped by the wonderful experience they have had living with two local families, learning about English culture, food, language and traditions, and sharing with their host families the stories and traditions of their own.
This September we are looking forward to welcoming more students from China, and as a result we are looking for friendly local families to join our register of Homestay Accommodation providers. Homestay Accommodation forms a key element of experiencing life in England for these young people, and as well as providing some extra income for the hosts, offering Homestay Accommodation can also be a rewarding and enriching experience for the whole family.
What facilities do I need to provide?
- A private furnished bedroom with a desk, chair, cupboard/wardrobe, mirror
- Access to a daily bath/shower
- Weekly laundry
- 2 meals/day Mon-Fri (Continental breakfast and evening family supper)
- 3 meals/day Saturday and Sunday
- Inclusion in all family trips/outings

- English speaking environment
How much does it pay?
Is the income taxable?
If this is your only/main home, income up to an annual limit of £4,250 is not subject to tax.
Are there any conditions?
All applicants and properties will be interviewed and screened carefully. DBS (previously CRB) checks will be conducted for all residents over the age of 18. Further conditions available on request.
What about half-term/holidays?
It varies! Some will go home, others will stay. If this causes a problem (for example at Christmas) the College will find alternative temporary accommodation for the student.
How old will the students be?
16-18 years old.
Is there other support available?
If the student (or indeed the Homestay family) has any concerns or worries, members of student support team and the International manager at the College are available to help. For Chinese students, there is also a Chinese speaking Guardianship Service which the student can contact at any time.
