2018: Year of Engineering

Alton College is the number 1 choice for STEM subjects in East Hampshire and 40% of students go on to study STEM subjects at University. 2018 is 'The Year of Engineering'  and the College has a broad range of activities planned from innovative talks to hands-on workshops for current students and our next cohorts in our dedicated partner schools. 

The College has spent over £15 million on developing the campus over the past 10 years including the state-of-the-art Sonardyne Centre for Engineering and Design Technology. We also have a dedicated STEM Ambassador, Dawn Elson who is Group Engineering Director at Merlin Entertainments with an impressive background in the RAF and engineering industry, she offers our students first hand insight and advice. 

Alton College offers three Engineering courses (BTEC Extended Diploma, BTEC Extended Certificate and BTEC First Extended Certificate (Level 2) and in last year’s exams, 75% of Engineering students achieved top grades. The College also works in partnership with the University of Portsmouth to offer a Foundation Degree in Engineering.   

In addition to university, students go on to apprenticeship schemes once they leave College. In 2017 Mo Gifford, previously at Perins achieved three Distinction* in the BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering and has gone on to study an Apprenticeship with Cranford Controls in Alton.  She said: ‘I loved the Electronics element of the course and after completing a work placement at Cranford I was offered a job and an apprenticeship. Thank you Alton College!’.
