AC Alumnus’ BGT WIN!
Alton College alumnus Michael Auger and his band Collabro won Britains Got Talent on Saturday night.
Michael studied Maths, Further Maths, Chemistry, Biology and Geography A Levels at Alton College from 2006-08 before leaving to study Accounting and Finance at the University of Bath. Music always played a significant part of his life and for many years he was involved in the Petersfield Youth Theatre and his university’s Music Society.
“It was the Music Society at Bath that spurred me on to seriously consider music as a career. I saw an advert on Facebook from two lads up north who were looking for new band members. I applied and before I knew it had been chosen along with two other singers from London,” he explained.
“We gelled quickly and had only been together for about a month when we thought we’d give the Britain’s Got Talent auditions a go. Our audition was aired on the first week of the show but we had to wait six weeks before everyone saw how we got on. Our Twitter following grew from 100 to 5000 followers, with people saying we’ve got great voices and wanting us to sing again. It was amazing, but really strange at the same time!” he said.
Michael attended Churcher’s College but chose to study A Levels at Alton College. “I remember making a deal with my Dad that I’d learn to drive so that I could get myself to Alton. I’m glad I did, I made some of my best friends at college and I really enjoyed my time there.”
Fiona Revell, Curriculum Manager for Chemistry at Alton College, taught Michael. She said: “Michael was a charming student; he was a very popular member of the Chemistry class and was always really enthusiastic during lessons. He was a pleasure to teach, thoroughly enjoying all aspects of the subject including all the practical work that we do. He worked very hard and thoroughly deserved the good grade he achieved. We couldn’t be more pleased for him”
Michael has kept College up to date with his BGT journey and minutes after his win took time out to email to thank everyone from College (his #collaborators) who voted for him. Other famous Alton College Alumni include Russell Howard, Yvette Cooper and Alison Goldfrapp.
Jane Machell, Principal said: ‘We are delighted that Michael and his band won the competition and wish them all the very best for their future in the music industry. We have many talented and inspirational students, past and present, from all disciplines, and we are always keen to celebrate their successes.’
The talented singer has now left his part-time job at Woolmer Service Station, Bordon, while the band work out their next move.
