Alton College Team Maths Challenge
Year 6 and 10 Pupils from primary and secondary schools in and around Alton added up to form the seven teams who took part in Alton College’s annual Maths Challenge this month. Pupils from The Butts Primary School teamed up with pupils from Amery Hill School; Sun Hill Junior School pupils teamed up with pupils from Perins School to form two teams; pupils from Herne Junior School joined students from The Petersfield School; junior and senior pupils from Alton Convent School teamed up; and junior and senior pupils from Ditcham Park School formed another team; as did junior and senior pupils from St Nicholas’ School. All the budding mathematicians equally enjoyed the fun and challenging competition which serves to raise maths aspirations locally.
AS Further Maths, Maths and Use of Maths students from Alton College helped supervise each team and mark their answers. The questions were devised by teachers, including Richard Lovejoy (Subject Leader for GCSE Maths at Alton College) and Dr Dave Lynch (Curriculum Manager for Maths at Alton College).
After three rounds of challenging Maths questions, following the format of the UK Maths Trust’s Senior Team Maths Challenge and in a repeat from last year, the winners of the competition were the joint team from Amery Hill School and The Butts Primary School. Second and third were the secondary and primary pupils from St Nicholas’ and Alton Convent Schools respectively.
Organiser Dr Lynch said: ‘The students had a great time working together on some really hard Maths questions; there was a wonderful buzz in the Hall, despite the high temperatures! They also got to ask about what Maths was like at school and college and it was really good to hear them looking forward to studying A-level Maths, hopefully at Alton College, in a few years’ time. Another reason for organising this competition was to train up potential students to represent Alton College in the future. With recent regional, national and international success in Maths competitions, I’d very much like to see some of these students help us win again!’
