An Oxbridge future

Christmas has come early for nearly 30 Alton College students who have secured interviews at Oxford and Cambridge Universities. Nearly one third of those are from Weydon School in Farnham: a record for the College.

Natalie Jones studied at Weydon School before joining Alton College. She hopes to study English Literature and Language and said: ‘I had my interview last week and think it went well. I’ve had coaching by my Alton College Oxbridge tutor, Dr Dan Duffy, since the summer. He gave us extra texts to study and practised unseen poems with us and this was exactly what came up in the exam. Thanks to Dr Duffy I felt really prepared.’

John Winter, Headteacher at Weydon School said: ‘We are delighted that 10 of our alumni are being interviewed by Oxbridge.  This is a very significant development for not just ourselves but our primary partner schools as well.  This level of academic excellence is achieved when every stage of a student's educational journey is adding value.  Well done to each student and well done to Alton College.  This is truly inspirational news.’

Sara Russell, Vice Principal for Curriculum, Quality and Student Support, said: 'This is amazing news. Yet again through our dedicated teaching and learning we have ensured our most gifted and talented students have the opportunity to study at the best universities in the country. Each year around 91% of our students secure places at University and 25% of these go on to the selective Russell Group Universities while 11% reach Oxford and Cambridge.’

She added: ‘We are thrilled that nearly 30 students have secured Oxbridge interviews and it’s impressive that 10 of these are from Weydon School. Congratulations to our all of our students for their tremendous efforts so far. We wish you the best of luck and a very Happy Christmas!'

The rest of the group represented Alton College’s other partner schools and one independent school.

Ben Gregory, a former Bohunt School pupil, hopes to study Philosophy and German. He explained: ‘I’d never even thought about applying to Oxbridge before Alton College encouraged and supported me to. I’m so thankful they did!’.
