Bar Mock Trial

The Alton College Bar Mock Trial Team competed for the ninth year in the Citizenship Foundation’s National Bar Mock Trial Competition national heat held at Guildford Crown Court this month.

The College enrichment course 'Bar Mock Trial' is open to students studying all subjects. This year the diverse team consisted of Law students and students studying a wide variety of A level and vocational courses.

The competition sees state school and college teams battle out mock criminal trials in real crown courts, and has been running for 25 years. The team's barrister mentor was Jane Bewsey QC. She principally prosecutes in serious and complex corporate fraud, money laundering and tax cases and was on hand to help students with their questioning technique and how to conduct themselves in court. In the competition, students take on the roles of barristers and witnesses and present their case against teams from rival schools and colleges. The team had two cases to present, one of assault arguing it was self-defence, and the other a case of witness intimidation.
