BBC celebrate Abbie’s success!
Alton College student Abbie Hines, previously at St Nicholas School, will be featured on The One Show on BBC One in a section called ‘Medical Memories’ on Thursday 23 April.
Production company Topical Television visited the College in March to film Abbie at work in the art department. When Abbie was 18 months old she had a rare form of liver cancer and was treated at Southampton General Hospital by surgeon Professor John Primrose. At the time, her story and medical progress featured on the first series of popular BBC daytime television programme City Hospital. Now 18 years on, Abbie is fully recovered from her illness and is studying for A levels in Graphic Design, English Literature and Law at Alton College and has secured a place to study a degree in Animation at the Arts University Bournemouth.
Topical Television produced City Hospital (one of the BBC’s most successful daytime programmes which ran for 10 years) and producer Jayne Whitelock remembers Abbie from the original series. She said it was ‘amazing to catch up with Abbie again, to see her doing so well at college and getting into university.’ Dr Sarah Jarvis GP, the health and medical reporter for The One Show was also on campus to interview Abbie for the programme and talk about her illness and subsequent progress and ambitions in life. Abbie showed Sarah two soft toys which she had with her in hospital as a child; Tigger who was still wearing his patient wristband and another cuddly toy which had not lost his squeak after all these years. Abbie (the second Alton College student to feature on the One Show after alumna Charlotte Bradley scooped first prize in their amateur painting competition last year) was filmed discussing a recent real-life class project called ‘#lovelocal’ where graphics students are collaborating with local shops in Alton town centre to produce advertising campaigns to promote and encourage shopping locally.
