Building Futures for Engineering Students

We are very proud to announce that the launch of our new ‘state of the art’ Engineering and Design Technology Centre will be brought forward to this autumn, thanks to a large donation from Sonardyne International Ltd for the construction of the building.

Today, Engineering and Design Technology skills are more valuable than ever. The UK is short of skilled people, which means qualifying in these areas offers serious employment opportunities.

Sonardyne International is a globally renowned, ocean technology company based in Hampshire and is dedicated to encouraging the education and advancement of young people in Engineering and Technology.

This new Centre will boost the quota of highly trained students at Alton College by a third. Each year another 310 students will be on their way to becoming the next generation of innovators. The dedicated courses taught in the new Centre will ensure that our students have the right skills, training and education to meet the needs of companies recruiting apprentices or to be selected for the best University courses.

Damian Hinds, MP, who is a Patron of this Appeal said, “The UK requires over 580,000 engineers with advanced skills in the next 4 years in order to compete with other developed economies. The new Engineering and Design Technology Centre at Alton College will provide the highest standards of teaching and learning in world class facilities. It is a great prospect for Alton and East Hampshire to have such an important facility here in our area.”

The final part of this fundraising Appeal is to provide the Centre with the best equipment possible.  We are also asking the wider community to support the futures of our young people.

Jane Machell, Alton College Principal, said “The College is enormously grateful to Sonardyne International Ltd for their huge generosity which has enabled the building works to be completed. We are also extremely grateful to a range of other donors for their contributions. We are now confident that with the help of the public, other companies and individuals, we will reach our target of £500k to fully equip the new Centre”.

If you are able to support our vision for the future generation of engineers, helping transform their lives and the world around them please donate at  or email or call the Fundraising Team on 01420 592398.
