Engineers Maintain Standards

Staff Sergeant Paul Birkbeck from the Abingdon Regimental Army Bicycle Race Team (Oxfordshire) once again came into College to assist students on the BTEC Level 2 Engineering course with their bike checks as part of the Bicycle Maintenance module. This established module on the course involves students bringing their bikes that need attention into College and working under supervision from Staff Sergeant Birkbeck to check the tyre treads, fix gear mechanisms and perform puncture repairs. The students will continue working on maintaining good levels of care on the bikes over the next 15 weeks of the course, focussing on the essential checks of tyres, brakes and gears.

Hilary Hill, Teacher of Engineering said: 'It is always a pleasure to welcome Staff Sergeant Birkbeck to the College to work with our students in these workshops and we are very grateful to him for his time. This visit serves to strengthen our links with the army, and gives the students the opportunity to see what they are learning put into everyday practice. The students are learning plenty of new techniques and skills that they can use outside of College. The numbers of students enrolled on this course is increasing year on year which is really encouraging.'
