Foundation Degree success
Tiffany Lee, former Amery Hill pupil, completed her Foundation Degree in Early Years Care and Education at Alton College. She went on to manage Little Me Day Nurseries, Basingstoke became Regional Manager and recently won a Nursery World Award. Now a mum herself we caught up with her during her maternity leave.
What made you decide to take the Foundation degree in Early Years Care and Education at Alton College?
I was working as a child-minder, and was fortunate to meet Caroline Emery (Teacher of Health and Social Care) who suggested that I looked at the course offered by the College in order to gain a qualification and accreditation. She said it would be really useful for my career path and would enable me to be taken seriously as a childcare professional.
What aspects of the course did you particularly enjoy?
It was really great to meet like-minded people on the course and to be able to network with people who were in the same situation as you. We all shared ideas and learnt from their experiences. Learning about the theory behind what you were doing was invaluable and gave you confidence when put in the real-life situation. The child protection information and sessions were also very useful, as was help in knowing how best to deal with parents and their concerns.
What else about studying at Alton College did you enjoy?
The learning environment was very accommodating, the staff were all very knowledgeable and I found them to be experts in their fields, plus they were really friendly and helpful giving great advice and guidance throughout the course. The online resources were particularly useful.
What advice would you give to students completing the course and going out into the world of work?
Listen to everything the teachers have taught you, be confident putting it into practice - especially when talking to the children’s parents – and be assertive as you know what is best for the child’s development.
What aspects of your job are particularly enjoyable/fulfilling?
The nursery where I work in Basingstoke, Little Me Day Nurseries, recently won the award for Two-Year-Old Provision at the Nursery World 2014 Awards. I was immensely proud to be part of this achievement as the nursery was only opened in 2011 as a franchise and we started operating independently in 2013, so to have come this far in such a short period of time shows the commitment of all our staff. The best bit of working at a nursery is of course seeing the children developing and being happy.
How do you see your career progressing?
I am currently Regional Manager at Little Me Day Nurseries, and I hope that in the future I am able to use my knowledge and expertise to help the company expand.
