Maths team score 11th place in national final

Our successful Maths department has yet again proved to be one of the top in the country after coming 11th in the National Final of the UK Maths Trust Senior Team Maths Challenge.

Ed Kirkby, Rob Carter (both previously at Amery Hill), James Butcher (Weydon) and Heidi Nicholson (Robert May’s) formed the winning team of the regional heat late last year and have since been preparing for the national final.  Over 1100 schools and colleges across the country entered the competition, with 62 making it to the London final after winning or scoring highly in their regional final.

The final was made up of a group round, a crossnumber round and a relay round. Our team scored 100% in the first round and lost just a few points in the other challenges. The top of the leader board was a close contest with three teams coming joint second to overall winners Westminster School. Last year, our team won the national final, beating top state and public schools and colleges from around the country.

Ed Kirkby has even more to celebrate as an individual competition ranked him 6th in the country. He blitzed the Senior Maths Challenge, taken by around 100,000 students nationally, with a 100% score for the third year running. This qualified him for the British Maths Olympiad Round 1, taken by around 1200 students, and his 60/60 result added to his 100% record. This further qualified him for the British Maths Olympiad Round 2, taken by around 100 students, where he scored an impressive 30/40, putting him in 6th place in the country. Ed has been invited to the UK International Maths Olympiad training camp at Trinity College, Cambridge during Easter for the third year running. He has also participated in the previous two joint Hungary/UK New Year training camps in Hungary.

Dr Dave Lynch, Curriculum Manager for Mathematics, said “Following last year’s win at both the Regional and National Finals and representing the UK in the Italian Team Maths Competition, annual excellent results in the individual Senior Maths Challenge and outstanding percentages of high grades at AS & A2 Maths and Further Maths, this is another excellent result.  I am very proud of the successes of Ed, Heidi, James & Rob and all our students!”
