Students' hard work pays off

Eleven students were presented with an award from the Lions Club of Alton last week for completing a minimum of 50 hours of volunteering in the community.

Welcomed to the college were the Lions Club of Alton and the Mayor of Alton who, along with Jane Machell; our Principal, and Jeannie Satchell; Volunteer Centre Manager, presented students with their certificates.

Of the 11 students, eight received a gold award for completing at least 100 hours of volunteering. Belinda Maude was amongst them who had spent a week working with disabled children at Woodlocks in Farnham. She said: “It was really challenging, but in a good way; it was a really good experience. I was able to go camping with the children and help organise lots of different activities.”

Jane Machell added: “It’s so nice to see that young people and their peers are giving a contribution to their community. To be able to work at College, study for exams, balance a social life and still give their time up for the wider community is excellent.”

Christy Farthing has been volunteering at Alton Infants School since she first responded to an advert to help paint signs which would teach children to identify different butterflies. She enjoyed the project so much that she kept in touch with the school and has since been varnishing the main signs at the front of the school. “It’s surprisingly fun and I’ve started to bring friends along with me.”

The projects that students have volunteered in have varied from coaching sport to helping in schools and even our own Students’ Union. Helen Freeston, who works for the Volunteer Centre and spends several hours a week based at Alton College, coordinated the project between the Lions Club and the students. She is really pleased that so many young people are finding opportunities to broaden their CV and said: “We were delighted with the response we had from the students and all the volunteering they have done. It is hoped this will inspire more young people to volunteer”.
