Teamwork adds up to Maths success!
Pupils from Mill Chase Academy and Bordon Junior School finished top in the fourth annual Alton College Team Maths Challenge recently. They were competing against pupils from local secondary and primary schools in an afternoon of complex individual and team rounds set by College Maths staff covering a broad range of mathematical skills.
Teams from Alton Convent, Amery Hill (2 teams), Eggar’s School, Mill Chase Academy, Perins and St Nicholas’, paired up with their feeder primary schools, Alton Convent, The Butts & St Lawrence’s, The Butts, Bordon Junior, Sun Hill Junior, and St Nicholas’ respectively. The winning team stopped Amery Hill School from winning for the fourth time in a row. Second were Perins & Sun Hill Junior Schools; and third were Amery Hill and The Butts Schools. All the students and teachers enjoyed themselves, along with five Alton College Maths students and 2 ex-students (who were either finishing off their Schools Direct year, or just about to start a PGCE) who were helping to supervise teams.
The average score was over 20% higher than last year, so the bottom team from this year would have come second last year. The winning secondary school, Mill Chase, had organised a similar competition for their feeder primary schools, from which the best team were picked to partner them.
