For All Students

Maths at University

  • Dr Calvin Smith, from Reading University's Maths Department, will be doing a fun Maths activity that will give you an idea of the sort of
    thing you might learn in a Maths degree
  • There will also be time for any questions about Maths at university – at Reading or other universities
  • Tuesday 17th June, 12.45 to 1.30pm, room 119
  • Please let Dave Lynch know if you're interested in attending as we need to have an idea of numbers

Engineering Summer School – for siblings / friends

  • 18-22 August @ Alton College
  • For students aged 12-14 who have an interest in Engineering
  • 5 day non-residential course
  • Cost: £70 per student, per week
  • Day 1: Introduction into engineering & robotics
  • Day 2,3,4: Robot design and build project
  • Day 5: Competition and exhibition day
  • Course Overview: Working alongside engineers and undergraduate mentors; students will learn engineering concepts while learning how to build competitive robots. Team work and communication skills also form an element of the teaching throughout the week

Personal Statement Presentations

  • You should all have attended one of the recent Personal Statement presentations provided by:
    • The University of Exeter
    • The University of Surrey
    • The University of Sussex
  • The presentations have been uploaded onto Moodle / Student Resources/Higher Education for reference
  • All students should have received a ‘Writing your Personal Statement’ booklet from your tutors
  • We also have Personal Statement information at the Hub from the Universities of Exeter and Surrey for collection

Careers and HE

  • There are many useful resources under the Careers and Higher Education tabs on Moodle:-
  • HEAP 2015 online – University choices – search by course or by university
  • KUDOS – Suggests careers and helps you to explore your career options
  • CAREERSCAPE – Careers reserch including real life case studies and information on HE courses

Welcome to Year 2 Meetings

  • ALL students on the first year of a two year programme MUST ATTEND a ‘Welcome to Year 2’ meeting on:
  • Monday 9th June
  • in the Martin Read Hall at the following times:
  • ‘A’ groups @ 10.10am
  • ‘F’ groups @ 10.35am
  • ‘N’ groups @ 11.00am
  • The above meetings are in place of normal timetabled lessons between 10.25-11.25am – all other lessons run as per timetable.
  • An alternative session will be held on Tuesday 10th June @1pm in the Martin Read Hall for those who are in Exams on Monday morning. Students who are unable to attend either day must advise the Student Hub

From 9th June onwards:

  • During this period you will start essential 2nd year work in your subjects.
  • You should attend ALL lessons, even if you have indicated that you are likely to drop a subject – if you do not attend these lessons you will not be able to continue this subject in September under any circumstances
  • If you are certain that you wish to drop a subject during this period you will be given information on how to request this at the Welcome to Year 2 meetings. At the current time you should focus on your exams.

UCAS – reminders

  • If you received university offers between 01Apr-08May make sure you don’t miss your reply date to respond to your offers
  • Check UCAS track – don’t miss your deadline!
  • Student Finance Applications – make sure you apply by the 30th May to ensure that you have the money in place for the start of your university course

  • Check that you are enrolled on the Jobs and Apprenticeships Forum on Moodle under Student Resources
  • We are receiving information regarding jobs and apprenticeship vacancies on a regular basis at present

  • If you haven’t please collect from your tutor today or come to the Student Hub
