Course Content:

A Level Music Technology is the ideal course for students who enjoy making music using a DAW. You will study both producing and engineering making use of our professional standard equipment.

Three Areas of Study underpin the A Level Music Technology specification, encouraging both breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding:

  • Area of Study 1: Recording and Production Techniques for both corrective and creative purpose
  • Area of Study 2: Principles of Sound and Audio Technology
  • Area of Study 3:  The Development of Recording and Production


Component 1: Recording – Externally Assessed (20%)
Component 2: Technology-based composition - Externally Assessed (20%)
Component 3: Listening and Analysing – 1 hr 30 mins Written Exam (25%)
Component 4: Producing and Analysing – 2hr 15 mins Practical Exam (35%)

Studying at Alton College:

You will work at your own music workstation (Apple iMac) developing your production skills and creating music. You will also take the lead in the recording studio, acting as a producer as you take control of a band for a recording session.
We are an official “Education Partner” to Leeds College of Music, you will have workshops and a guaranteed interview at LCM.

Entry requirements:

Students should normally have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4. 

We would normally expect you to have gained at least grade 5 in GCSE Music and/or Grade V Theory plus Grade V on an instrument. 

Course costs:

A good pair of studio headphones and an external hard drive/ large USB Stick.
