Course Content:

You will study:

  • Child development from birth up to five years, studying patterns of development and explore each area of development including; physical, cognitive, language, emotional and social. You will use your new knowledge to support children to progress to the next stage of development.
  • Developing professional practice skills for work in early years settings, where you will learn about carrying out your role and responsibilities, having a positive work ethic and what skills and behaviours are needed. You will learn how to present yourself and build your organisation and communication skills.  
  • Supporting children’s learning through play which is one of the most important and enjoyable aspects of the role. Children’s play is critical for their learning. You will learn about the different types of play that are important for children at different ages and stages. You will also look at the importance of promoting play in all areas to improve development.
  • 280 hours of professional practice required to pass the course. 

Assessment:

  • 25% external assessment and 75% coursework
  • Unit 1 and 2 external units
  • Placement will be assessed

Studying at Alton College:

Lessons in the classroom will include a mixture of formats including group work, individual activities, guest speakers, role plays, using case studies and some formal note-taking sessions. 

Entry requirements:

 

Students should normally have achieved a Grade 3 profile at GCSE. For GCSEs which remain with the old grading system, a Grade 3 is equivalent to a Grade D. 

To study this course, you should also have an interest in working with people. In addition you will need a cleared DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check. This is very important as we need to be confident sending you out on placement to work with vulnerable people.
