Course Content:

At Alton College on the BTEC Performing Arts course you will study:

Seven core units covering a range of skills in dance, drama and singing:

  • Investigating Practitioners’ Work; describing, analysing and evaluating dances/plays/songs by influential choreographers/playwrights/drama practitioners/composers/lyricists.
  • Developing Skills and Techniques; using skills as an actor, dancer and singer in two shows.
  • Group Performance; creating a group performance from scratch in any discipline based on a specific brief.
  • Performing Arts in the Community; creating a piece for a specific target audience such as young children or those with disabilities.
  • Individual Performance Commission; creating a portfolio of solo performances based on a specific brief.
  • Employment Opportunities; learning about job roles within the industry, the skills relating to pitching an idea and self-promotion.
  • Final Live Performance; larger scale performance such as a musical or a play to a live audience.
    Six other units are chosen by College and may cover: musical theatre, jazz dance, singing techniques, storytelling, variety performance, site specific performance, acting styles, choreography, children’s theatre, physical theatre, improvisation or screen acting.

Studying at Alton College:

Lessons activities are varied, from practical technique classes to creative workshops to written analysis tasks. We also organise a huge range of trips to theatres, visiting workshops, alongside many opportunities to perform at College. This is a really exciting course for anyone who wishes to pursue a career within the Performing Arts Industry.

Entry requirements:

Students should normally have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4. For GCSEs which remain with the old grading system, a Grade 4 is equivalent to a Grade C. Alternatively, if you have studied at Level 2, you should have achieved a merit or above. Vocational courses are an ideal qualification for students who prefer coursework.

To study this course, you should have experience and interest in Performing Arts.
