Course Content:

  • Children’s development from 0 to 7years 11 months. You will look at physical, cognitive, language, social and emotional development. You will also look at how we meet their health and care needs as they develop.
  • Development of children’s communication, literacy and numeracy skills through their play and interaction with others.
  • How children play and learn, both indoors and outdoors.
  • How we observe the children so that we can then plan activities to meet the needs of individual children.
  • You will also have the opportunity to develop your practical skills as you will need to complete 750 hours in placements with children.

Assessment:

  • One unit is assessed by means of an exam.
  • Two units are assessed by controlled assignments
  • Other units are assessed by coursework 

Studying at Alton College:

You will have a mixture of formal and less formal learning experiences. Some sessions will be in the form of lectures but you will also participate in a mixture of activities – whether working individually or in groups. You will participate in role plays, discussions and presentations. You will spend two days a week in a childcare setting throughout the course.

Entry requirements:

Students should normally have achieved at least five GCSEs at grade 9-4. For GCSEs which remain with the old grading system, a Grade 4 is equivalent to a Grade C. Alternatively, if you have studied at Level 2, you should have achieved a merit or above. Vocational courses are an ideal qualification for students who prefer coursework.
