What is the Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Creative Media Production?

This is a one year practical course which will begin to develop and train you in all stages of the media production process. Covering moving image and print based media, it is an assignment based course, working on different briefs covering a range of media products. You will learn to operate video cameras and edit on computers adding music and sound effects. You will also learn to write and edit scripts. You will work on computers to design and produce print media products.

Is the Level 2 Cambridge Technical Diploma in Creative Media Production suitable for me?

Are you a creative, hands-on, energetic person, with a good eye for what looks good and what doesn’t? Do you like working on computers, with camera equipment and being part of a creative team? You will be expected to work more independently than you might have previously experienced and to cultivate a different relationship with college teachers. The course does require a real commitment from you as you may be filming outside of college hours and on location. You must be able to work responsibly as part of a crew, as the media industry relies on people with strong social skills.

How will I learn?

Lessons are focused on developing the technical skills necessary to produce effective media products and an understanding of how the industry works. You might be working individually editing a video or researching a specific product, or working in pairs to complete a storyboard exploring narrative. You will also work in a small film crew and present your finished work to the class.  You will have class discussions with your teacher and analyse existing media products, before researching your own. You will also have the choice to attend field trips throughout the year to use your practical skills.

How will I be assessed?

You will study a total of eight units during this one year course, all of which are assessed by coursework: this may include the production of portfolios, presentations, practical projects and staff observations.
For each unit you complete you will be awarded a Pass, Merit or Distinction grade. You will also be awarded an overall grade which will be at Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.

After the course, if you have achieved a Merit or Distinction grade, you could have the opportunity to go on to study on the BTEC Level 3 Creative Media Production course, if you are considering entering the film and television industry. Or you might go onto another suitable Level 3 course, tailored to your interests and career aspirations.

Entry requirements

You would normally have achieved a Grade D profile at GCSE. For GCSE English and Maths where a new grading system has been introduced, a Grade 3 is equivalent to a Grade D. To study this subject you should have an interest in creative subjects.

Course costs

As well as providing your own pens, pencils, notebooks etc, you will pay a £50.00 deposit. £25.00 of the deposit will be retained to cover media resources such as DV tapes, blank CDs and DVDs to record your work on.
