Course Content:

This course will provide students with an interest in art and design with the opportunity to explore the materials, methods and processes that support art and design activities, and to begin to develop some related technical skills.

The qualifications draw upon established approaches to teaching, learning and assessment that are successfully proven to appeal to and engage students seeking practical study over a more academic study route. The qualification's structure provides a linked introduction to the broad context within which art and design activity sits.

Stage one will be an introductory project that will allow you to develop new practical skills, creative approaches to producing art, design and media work as well as developing your critical thinking.

Stage two will help you identify your chosen pathway whilst developing skills in drawing, photography, media, fashion, graphics and 3D sculpture.  You will be supported by lecturers who are active in their field, along with the use of some excellent resources, in the discovery of your chosen progression route after this course.

Stage three allows you to bring together all your skills and knowledge in the form of a final project.

Studying at Alton College:

Lessons activities are wide ranging and stimulating from theory based to practical exploration.  You will develop your own ideas by researching into other artists and be encouraged to examine the world around you visually.  You will work through a variety of techniques and learn to work with appropriate media, materials and processes.  Art and Design students are expected to write about and annotate work, to express personal and creative ideas and produce final outcomes using a range of approaches and methods derived in textiles, graphic design and photography.

Entry requirements:

Students should normally have achieved a Grade 3 profile at GCSE. You should have an interest in art related subjects.

Course costs:

Purchase of consumables over the year: approx. £20 -30 to go towards the end of year exhibition.
