Laura Jurd

Laura Jurd came to Alton College from Amery Hill School and is studying Music, Music tech and photography, accompanied by a place on the specialist jazz course. She is a member of the college jazz band, big band, choral society and composer's ensemble, whilst outside college she plays with the Hampshire Youth Jazz Orchestra, Basingstoke Symphony Orchestra and is in a jazz quartet with other college students. In addition, she has recently began playing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra. Laura is studying on the jazz course at Trinity College of Music.

Martha Russell

Martha Russell came to Alton College from The Petersfield School, now known as The Performing School. She is studying Music, Music Technology, Mathematics and French at AS level as well as taking part in the Jazz Course. She takes part in many college ensembles such as Big Band, Choral Society, Chamber Group and Chamber Choir, whilst outside college she plays in HCSC (Havant Clarinet and Saxophone Choir) and various woodwind ensembles. A small group she has played in previously attended the Labour Party Conference 2006, performed on the HMS Victory for Lord Nelson's 200th anniversary and at the TUC in Brighton. Martha is studying on the jazz course at Birmingham Conservatoire.

"I am planning on spending the money on going to a jazz school this summer and to help pay for my music lessons. This will hopefully help me improve my skills on saxophone and be a bonus when I apply to conservatoires next year."

Martynas Vilpisauskas

Martynas came to Alton College from Amery Hill School in Alton and studied for A levels in Music, Music Technology and ICT. As well as being on the Jazz Course he is a member of the Choral Society, Composers Ensemble, and Jazz Band. He is currently studying jazz singing at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama.

James Welch

James Welch

Jamie came to Alton College from Heath End School in Farnham gaining A levels in Music Technology, Physics and Maths. Was a member of the live sound class and helped develop Phase X Records

"My scholarship has helped me buy theory papers, as well as a microphone with which I have recorded a mini-album, and it has enabled me to see the Italian Instable Jazz Orchestra, as well as a dress rehearsal of Billy Budd at the English National Opera."

Lauren Mackrell

Lauren Mackrell

Lauren was a member of the Chamber Choir, Choral Society and Gamelan Group. She took the role of Belinda in the College production of Dido and Aeneas.

"I have used some of my scholarship money on scores for Grade VIII Singing and am very grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain Easter course 2005, thanks to scholarship funding."

Julie Finklaire

Julie Finklaire

Julie studied for A levels in Music and was a member of the Big Band, Choral Society, Chamber Orchestra, Close Harmony Group, Jazz Band and Symphonic Jazz Band. She has just graduated with a first class degree in Music from Southampton University.

"Having been fortunate enough to have been awarded a Music scholarship, I was able to attend regular flute lessons with Ian Clarke, a professional flautist, composer and teacher at the Guildhall School of Music. These lessons have been absolutely invaluable."

Richard Shepherd

Richard Shepherd

Richard studied A levels in Music, History and Archaeology. A saxophonist, he was a member of the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, as well as the College's Big Band, Jazz Band and Symphonic Jazz Band. Richard is still lead tenor with NYJO and is a member of the Ronnie Scott's Big Band, Time Zones, has performed with Tim Garland's Northern Underground Orchestra, and played Bari for the week for John and Cleo's Christmas Show at the Stables at the end of last year. Pete Long of Gillespiana described him as "One of the most phenominal young sax players on the planet."
